Technique Of The Month

Lone Kimono

Attack: The opponent is standing in front of you, grabbing your lapel with his left hand. He may be optionally preparing to deliver a right punch towards your face.

Defense:

  1. From a natural stance step your left foot back into a right neutral bow as you simultaneously pin the opponent’s left hand with your left hand, and execute a right aggressive upward block under his left elbow joint.

  2. Immediately circle your right arm downward and then outward and upward to a high chambered position off the right side of your head. Deliver a right inward downward-diagonal hammering forearm to strip the opponent’s left hand off your lapel. Your right hand travels to your left hip and rebounds into a right outward upward-diagonal whipping handsword to the opponent’s throat. Immediately retract your right arm to a cover position off your right side.
Notes & Questions:
  1. What timing is used when executing the left hand pin and the right aggressive upward block?

  2. What Power Principle is used in the execution of this aggressive upward motion?

  3. If you sink downward as you execute the aggressive upward block, what basic Kenpo principle are you violating?

  4. Besides injuring the opponent’s left arm, what other benefit does the aggressive upward block provide?

  5. What major Power Principle is used in the execution of the outward upward-diagonal handsword?
