Technique Of The Month

Twirling Wings

Attack: The opponent is standing behind you, applying a two-hand stiff-arm shoulder grab.

Defense:

  1. From a natural stance, and while keeping your hands by your side, slide your left foot one-stance length behind (and just past) your right foot as you establish a base on the 12:00 - 6:00 line.  Immediately rotate counterclockwise into a left forward bow as you execute a left vertical outward checking/clearing motion to the outside of the opponent's left arm and a right inward horizontal elbow strike to his left ribcage.
  2. Slide your right hand across your chest to grab and pin his right arm as your left hand returns to chamber position.  Without hesitation pivot clockwise into a left neutral bow and deliver a left inward horizontal elbow strike to the opponent’s midsection as your right hand maintains its grab.
Notes & Questions:
  1. In Parker Kenpo, to what specifically does the term "twirling" refer?
  2. What is the major power principle demonstrated in Twirling Wings?
  3. In Twirling Wings your initial foot maneuver involves establishing a base along the 12:00 - 6:00 line.  Why would you NOT want to slide your left foot back towards 4:30 (or 5:00) to establish your base?
  4. Your left arm should not begin to move until AFTER you've begun your rotation.  What basic Kenpo rule would likely be broken if your arm were to move before beginning the rotation?
  5. Are you executing a left vertical outward "block" in Twirling Wings?  Why or why not?
  6. In compliance with basic Kenpo rules, where should your left arm make contact on the opponent's left arm?
  7. Into what direction is the powerline of your right inward elbow strike?
